Friday Fave Five

This week soared by and the trees are budding, the birds are singing and the flowers blooming.

We have all been relishing the record high warm temps, and making every opportunity to get outside!

One fave this week included a 8 mile bike ride in the country with hubs.  It was a beautiful day, and we enjoyed being able to ride together.

Another favorite is grilling.  Yes I grill through the winter, but it is so nice to now sit on the deck and relax while grilling.  And not freeze, and have to wear gloves!

I made these scrumptious grilled ham steaks for Easter.  I grew up eating this yummy ham treat, and now love to make them for my family

Ingredients

  • 1-1/2 cups orange juice
  • 1/2 cup cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons ground cloves
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 2 to 3 teaspoons ground mustard
  • 2 to 3 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 3 bone-in fully cooked ham steaks (1 pound each and 3/8 inch thick)

Directions

  • In a small bowl, combine the first seven ingredients. Pour 1-1/2 cups into a large resealable plastic bag; add ham steaks. Seal bag and turn to coat; refrigerate for 1-2 hours. Cover and refrigerate remaining marinade for basting.
  • Coat grill rack with cooking spray before starting the grill. Drain and discard marinade. Grill ham steaks, covered, over medium heat for 10-15 minutes or until heated through, basting frequently with reserved marinade. Yield: 12 servings.

Also I had a good laugh when I came home the other day to find that my dear DAUGHTER and her friend had caught this little friend!

My last fave is this cool fire pot I purchased for enjoying while sitting on the deck.  I didn’t really know what is was when I got it, but it looked cool!  Fire comes out of the center of a ceramic pot.  You simply pour a citronella gel into the center of the pot, light on fire…..and you have a nice flame!  It’s actually quite relaxing to watch it on a nice night on the deck!

  1. Great weather, beautiful blooms, great food, exercise and relaxation. Sounds like you had a great week. Notice I didn’t mention the snake :0)

  2. I bet it keeps the skeeters away too, huh?

That Inventor of yours seems to be an Inspector as well! She’s always got her nose to the ground doesn’t she? I hope she didn’t ask “can we KEEP him, Mom?”… LOL!

You know… we grill almost every night too! All year round! But I have NEVER thought to do a ham steak on the grill! That sounds YUMMY! Might be the one way to actually get me to EAT a little ham from time to time! (it is NOT my favorite meat… by a long shot!)

  3. Your Inventor is an intrepid naturalist too!

You had a great week with that bike ride. We grill too (read: The Professor grills) several evenings every week. Our weather is much milder so it’s not a great feat as yours is with mittens, mufflers and ice.

    Have a great weekend!

  4. I love ham. Will definitely give this a try! Have to wait on the grilling though. It’s been so windy here that there is no way we can grill. Yesterday the winds reached about 45-50 mph.

That fire pot is awesome. How big is it?

  5. Susanne – It’s actually fairly small, about (??) 4in. diameter?? Nice flame!

  6. I love sitting out on the porch in the evenings. We are in the middle of a house rennovation so we don’t have a porch right now! Ha! But, we will have a new one built sometime this summer. I would love a bike ride with my husband, but I think I might collapse after 8 miles! Sounds fun! Have a great week!

  7. I love grilled ham steaks! I need to learn how to grill — my husband is a master at it, but we can’t wait til he gets home most nights: I usually try to have dinner ready when he gets home. He does grill often on weekends, though.

  8. That little firepot is SO cute! Not so much the “little friend.” I would not be laughing — in fact, I would have have caught it.

    Enjoyed reading your list.
    Happy weekend!
